Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil Review & Giveaway
I have been a fan of coconut oil for almost a year now. I first discovered it as a hair product and did not know you could eat it. Like most people, coconut oil was never introduced in my family growing up. I was so excited when I found out that coconut oil was actually a healthier oil, so I stocked up and became brand loyal to an unspecified brand . Then I discovered Tropical Traditions and fell in love.
Before you run out the door to purchase some coconut oil there are a couple things to keep in mind. There are different types of coconut oil and you should know which one you need before purchasing.
Virgin is unrefined and Expeller pressed is refined but both kinds can be used in cooking and in beauty products or other uses. You can read more about this here
Tropical Traditions Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is odorless, this is especially important when you don’t want a coconut taste in your food when you are frying or baking. I used the coconut oil to bake bread and cookies and I even used it to fry an egg or two. I saw no difference in how the the oil worked, I do not think that my food tasted any better or worse.
In the picture below you can see that the jar is liquid but when it is in a climate that is cooler than 76 degrees it will turn solid. You can leave the jar on your counter during winter and it will be solid but workable. If you keep it in the fridge you will need to use a spoon or another metal object to get some out and then you will need to put it in the microwave or place it on top of the stove while preheating your oven and it will liquefy.
The pictures below show when it is liquid and what it looks like when it is solid
I have made a lot of different foods with the coconut oil and so far I have been pleasantly surprised at how versatile it is. As far as baking goes I did notice that with certain items such as cookies you do have to experiment with the amount of oil to put in. My cookies came out very oily so I just started reducing the amount until I got a decent cookie. I saw no difference in breads but noticed that used in coating bread pans I could slip the bread out of the pan a lot easier.
As you can see from the above pictures, I enjoyed my Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil, a lot!
The fact that it is organic made from only fresh coconuts ,and made in smaller batches makes this product a staple that would wind up in my kitchen. I can say that I would recommend this product to my readers because it is something that I already use daily, just a better quality brand.
Other Uses
Coconut oil is not just for cooking. It is also used in many health and beauty products including hair care, body lotions and even facial products. In fact, you can use coconut oil straight from the jar as a moisturizer for your skin and hair or make your own beauty products by searching for natural cosmetic recipes online. Coconut oil can also be used as a cleaning agent, put a little bit on a damp cloth and it can be used to wipe down the shower or other places where scum builds up, then just spray off with vinegar. Some use it to kill head lice, although I have not tried it myself I hear it works just as well as mayonnaise.
